There are two different products that come under the Travel Insurance heading:

• Travel out of Australia, and
• Travel for visitors into Australia

Travel out of Australia:
Your domestic private health insurance will not cover you outside Australia.  Overseas medical, and particularly hospital costs can be crippling, and in many countries the standard of health cover may not be to our required levels.

Good travel insurance will not only cover costs of treatment and hospitalisation, but if deemed necessary, will cover costs of repatriation to where first-class treatment can be obtained.

Travel insurance will also cover loss of luggage, personal effects, and travel documents, plus cancellation costs, travel delays and disruptions, hire car damage excess, personal liability and much more.

Travel for Visitors into Australia:
People who arrive in Australia, on holiday, extended visits, seeking permanent residency, etc. and who do not qualify for a Medicare card, need to apply for “Visitor's to Australia” health insurance to have coverage for medical and hospital expenses.
